Initial Anki Settings
Set up your baseline options once so Anki does not interfere with review flow and FSRS can function properly.
Start by opening any deck’s Options (gear icon) and confirming which preset it uses. Most users should standardize on a single preset across all decks to avoid inconsistent scheduling behavior. However, if you were studying between two wildly different modalities (ex: Medical School Deck, and Languages Deck), you might want to have custom settings to match more learning for each. I have never found a use case for different profiles within medical school studying.
Set New cards/day and Maximum reviews/day to very high values (e.g. 9999). This makes it so that Anki does NOT hide cards from you, and you get to decide how many cards you do. There were days I did 0 cards, and some days that I did a few hundred cards in a day based off my unique study schedule. By default, Anki caps this at 20 per day which makes no sense.
Enable FSRS in the options panel. This switches scheduling to a "AI" model that adapts to your performance over time. At first, this model uses an emperical model which works very well. It will only get better with time.
